Recommendations Regarding Debt Collectors
Lapin Law Offices recommends the following regarding communicating with debt collectors:
- Do not give out financial information to debt collectors.
- If you do not believe a debt is valid, ask for written verification of the debt.
- If the debt collector is not the original debtor, such as a credit card company, find out whether they are working on behalf of the original debtor or on their own behalf.
- If you are going to try and negotiate with the debt collector, specify phone numbers and times that the debt collector may call you. You are free to change or revoke when and where a debt collector may call you.
- Save all letters, notices, phone messages, voice mails, text messages and emails from collection agencies.
- Try to locate, in your own files, the documents regarding the original cause of the debt, such as credit card agreement.
- Record the time of the call, the caller’s name and what was specifically said.
- Make notes of your conversations with any debt collectors as soon as possible after the conversation.
